THE CONDITIONAL BLESSINGS OF PSALM 91

“He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty

I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress: My God: in Him will I trust. Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the flower, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with His feathers and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shall not be afraid of the terror of the night nor the arrow that flieth by day. Nor for the pestilence that worketh in darkness: nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall by thy side and ten thousand by thy right hand but it shall not come nigh thee only with thine eyes shall thou see and behold the wicked because thou has made the Lord which is thy refuge even the Most High thy habitation, there shall no evil befall you neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling place; for he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shall tread upon the lion and the adder: the young lion and the dragon shall thou trample under thy feet. Because he has set his love upon me,, therefore will I deliver him. I will set him on high because he has known my name. He shall call upon me and I will answer him: I will deliver him in trouble: I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and shew him my salvation”

Many times, when we come across psalms filled with beautiful promises as the one above, we are overwhelmed by the beauty in the promise that we fail to see the conditions that comes with the blessing. We confess as Christians these promises ignorant of the fact that the promise were made with conditions; meaning these promises cannot be gotten if the conditions are not met therefore no matter how much confession is made, the blessing goes to the one who meets the condition.

Chapter 1 of Psalm 91 begins with the condition and upon obeying the instruction; the blessings begin to unfold… “He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High”

Notice the psalmist didn’t say He that dwells in the public place (church) of the Most high rather the secret place.

Psalm 91 is a beautiful psalm with 16 verses, of which 15 are blessings and one, just one is the instruction. Wouldn’t it be only normal if that strikes a chord? All these blessings? one instruction? If you have ever asked this question or if you have never asked this question then this is a moment of truth.  The blessings in this psalm are exceedingly protective. I mean, who doesn’t want protection? Giving the fact that our lives are daily threatened by different factors ranging from the eco-system to the forces beyond human reasoning, who wouldn’t want protection for all these?  And because of the turbulent nature of life, Christians embrace this psalm reading pass the secret to the blessings.

WHERE IS THE SECRET PLACE?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO DWELL IN THE SECRET PLACE OF THE MOST HIGH?

OF WHAT IMPORTANCE IS IT TO US AND TO GOD WHEN WE DWELL IN HIS SECRET PLACE?

WHO CAN DWELL IN HIS SECRET PLACE?

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SECRET PLACE?

The Secret Place is the place that is secretive to you and God alone. Where alone moments between you and God are shared. A place where God reveals secret, great and mighty secret; fenced in and hidden. A place where immense Love from both parties is expressively expressed, where you are all about God and God is all about you.

On a lighter note, have you ever sat in the congregation, filled with so much awe, wondering where your pastor gets his revelations from? Saying to yourself “how does he know all these things? Are we reading the same bible?” well, the answer is “he has an abode in a secret place where he shares secret moments with his master; THE ONE on whose errand he is on, and in that secret place, sharing that secret moment, God gives him deep insights to His Word even showing him His ways.”

TO DWELL is an action word which means TO LIVE, TO RESIDE, TO LINGER ON thus To Dwell in the secret place of the Most High is to make an ABODE (settled dwelling, housing, have a residence, occupy a position, live, resides, waiting and staying continuously continually) in the Secret Place (secluded hidden unknown place made know by revelation or discovery) of the Most High.  It means having a have a residential address in a secluded place where God the Almighty makes known to you “JUST FOR YOU AND HIM”. It surpasses the regular Sunday and midweek bible sturdy meetings which involves other people. TO DWELL in his secret place means having a private relationship with God: where the cravings and desires of the heart pushes you to want more of God, knowing Him deeper and deeper; Seeking for more companionship with God than that which is gotten from church … the man who has a dwelling place in God’s secret place is known  to and by God and God IN RETURN MAKES Himself known to Him. Dwelling in God’s secret Place is walking with God and to walk with a person is to be on the same track, step, line or page with the person.

To dwell in God’s secret place is to have continuous fellowship with God; having a burning desire to know His name, His personality and all that He represents.

I have never ceased to wonder and ponder on how Enoch (a man of flesh and like passion) walked with God. The relationship that existed between Enoch and God was so strong that the story could not be told still the bible could not be written without mentioning it

“When Enoch was 65 years old, Methuselah was born. Enoch walked (in habitual fellowship) with God after the birth of Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch was 365 years:  And Enoch walked (in habitual fellowship) with God and he was not for God took Him (home with Him)”. Genesis 5 :21-24 (AMP)

Hmmm! The jaw breaking part of this concise biography of this man is the later part which says he walked habitually in fellowship with God that He was not for God took him home with Him.

Firstly, the word Fellowship has two intriguing meanings.

1: An association or a company of people that share the same interest, aim or similar taste

2:  friendly relationship; companionship

These two definitions take us to the book of the beginning, “Genesis”. We were created to be like God, think like God, and act like God and on behalf of God having a friendly relationship with God… “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26a).

We are all about Him. The things we do and the things we say, to bring put a smile on His face and bring Glory to His Name which is the first definition and there is no way the first can work out perfectly well if the second is not greatly put into consideration and action.

We cannot be for God when we are not to God and on this foundational principle the great psalm 91 was built. God is undeniably principled.  You cannot eat the fruit of a tree without loving the tree. The 15 blessings are rewards that are attached to the keeping of the No 1 “he that dwells in the secret place”

JESUS The CHRIST was accustomed to raising up early a great while before the break of dawn to go up to a secret place in maintaining His personal relationship with His Father (Mark 1: 35).  If Jesus’ mission could not be accomplished without His secret moments, then ours are no exception. Jesus was too crowded; everyone wanted a piece of Him, plots were against Him and the weight was all on Him, having a great mission to accomplish. So He shut the door between Him and the world and opened the door to another world of Him and His Father

There are many sides to God but these two “His Face and His Hands” encompasses them all.  Witnessing the “Hand of God” is a reward for seeking the “Face of God”. We please the heart of God when we seek “His Face” therefore He gladly opens “His Hands” towards us and for us.  When we dwell in the secret place o the Most High, we shut the world outside and say to God “You are all that matters. You come before everything and I exalt You above everything” and in the place, with so much gladness of heart, He teaches everything as pertaining our purpose: How to go about it.

The secret place can be anywhere and you can have these moments at anytime. It can be in the confinement of your room or just a carved out corner in your room, It can be on a mountain or in a cave. But don’t fret if you don’t have a room to yourself or someone else manages your life thereby dictating how you use your time. The key is giving God your heart, expressing your love and desire for Him, recognizing His authority and rulership.  You can be in a crowd and shut the crowd but if you can move away from the crowd it would do you more well.

Giving God a part of your day can never be over emphasized. The rewards attached to it are priceless and can never be bought. Anytime is a good time but the best part will be the night-early hours before the dawn as every hour of the day has its significance and its mystery

WHAT IS IN IT FOR YOU?

A whole lot is in it for you but to list a few… if you seek the Face of God

  • Your strength is renewed (Isaiah 40:31)
  • Your fears and worries die
  • You carry aura of beauty and glory
  • Wellness and Longevity of life
  • Honor and prosperity
  • Protection
  • Productivity
  • Wisdom
  • Knowledge
  • Understanding
  • Power
  • Faith etc

I mean, what more could you ask for!

It is important to know that we go seeking the face of God not because of what we want from Him but because of what we want to give to Him- “the expression of our love for Him”. Verse 14 of the same Psalm says “because he has set his love upon Me…I will rescue him, I will protect him because he acknowledged My Name”.

So look for GOD and I assure you, you will look like HIM!!!

God bless you! Till the next time… Looking forward to sharing with you…

HOW TO WALK WITH GOD (PART 1)

Beautiful day to you, and thank you for joining me today. I believe you are on a quest for knowledge which is why you stumbled upon this article, so for the next few days, I would like to take you on a step by step journey and in my own little way, contribute to the development of your relationship with God as the most important thing to God is our relationship with Him which in turn affects our relationship with Men

Walking with God I would say is the most interesting journey any human can embark on while living. While it is interesting, most at times, it is not pleasing to the flesh as “wants” will contradict “needs” but the assuring fact is that it is pleasing to the Soul; knowing that the salvation of our soul is what we are after “what good is it for someone to gain the whole world and lose or forfeit his own soul” (Matt. 16:26, Mark 8:36, Luke 9:25). Also, as interesting as it is, it’s sometimes not interesting to our family and friends as God gets to spend more time with you then they do but another assuring fact is the reward will be evident for them all to enjoy. The most intriguing part of walking with God is that your spiritual growth is speeded; gradually transforming you into a supernatural being. So as you and I walk step by step on this sectional teachings, my believe is that at the end, your relationship with God will go deeper in measurement. So fasten your seat belt and trust me to take you on a life changing journey.

Our main sturdy character will be Enoch and sturdy text will be Genesis 5:22-24 (AMP)

“Enoch walked in habitual fellowship with God after the birth of Methuselah and had other sons and daughters so all the days of Enoch’s life were 365 years. And Enoch walked in habitual fellowship with God and he was not , for God took him home with Him”

I love the carefully selected words like “in habitual fellowship” used in this scripture. It gives an explicit explanation to the verb “walk” showing the way or manner Enoch walked with God and this “way or manner” made his walk with God historical (which is why the character of Enoch will be studied throughout life time)

Let’s break down these three words “WALK”, “HABITUAL” AND “FELLOWSHIP”

WALK

I have selected three definitions from the dictionary explanation of this action word “walk” as

  • To advance or travel on foot at a moderate speed or pace; proceed by steps; move by advancing the feet alternately so that there is always one foot on the ground in bipedal locomotion and two or more feet on the ground in quadrupedal locomotion”
  • To go about on earth, or appear to living persons, as a ghost.
  • To conduct oneself in a particular manner, pursue a particular course of life. And the example used was “to walk humbly with thy God”

HABITUAL –as in habit means

  • a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that s hard to give up.
  • An acquired behavioral pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary
  • A routine of behavior repeatedly regularly and tends to occur subconsciously

FELLOWSHIP

  • A community of interest, feeling etc
  • An association of persons having similar tastes, interests etc

Okay, now that we have broken down these words in simplicity, let’s go into the main course “how to walk with God”

I define walking with God as “the development of a consistent daily and intimate fellowship of His knowledge (who He is and what He represents)”. It is an habitual act that is acquired through a period of training; conscious subjection of the human body, its cravings and desires. It is more than having a 5- 10 minutes prayer life or Sunday- Sunday tonic  character attitude (having time for God only on Sundays) it is not a joking affair, rather it is for those who have decided to kill self i.e. “I”, “me”, “my” or “mine” so they can be alive in and to God. it is the total dependency on the help of His Spirit and His Word.

When God wants to take a stroll, you ought to be found available. It includes sleepless nights and sold out days. Dying to fleshy desires like food etc. Walking with God entails the eradication of fear, and having the fullness of faith with an open mind of no limitations. Because it a life time journey between humanity and divinity, having an open mind is of topmost importance as the human mind has its limitations while God is the unlimited God. One must know that God can do anything and all things. One must also know that God can use anything to the Glory of His name being the owner of all this that exist. I say this because we have Christians who do not believe some things are godly so they rather term such things as magic or black magic or devilish. I always say there is no power that is greater than God’s and if there is a fake; it is only an indication that there is an original.

Nothing is bigger than God and for anybody to want to walk with God, the person must first establish this fact that he or she is in for a mind-blowing ride that will dazzle and defile all human or scientific reasoning. Anybody can walk with God; whether you are young or old in age or in Christendom, the only criteria needed is a pure and ready heart. “A ready heart” because your availability to God is one thing that qualifies you for the journey and “a pure heart” because we know the heart is what God looks at. In the book of Matthew, chapter 5, Jesus shares some deep secrets with us; revealing some key points needed for the kingdom of God and amongst the 9 secrets, the one that relates directly to God is “blessed are the pure in heart” for the reward of those that are pure in heart is that they shall see God. (Just between you and I, sometimes I feel the simplicity of the manner at which Jesus shares these secret makes some people miss the gravity of the whole deal. Because they sounds and look simple, many people do not have the clear meaning to these beatitudes but then again, it is a secret, so it can’t be easy. On the grounds of love, Jesus gave away so many secrets that are hidden in simple words and parables;  all the more reason why we need the help of the Holy Spirit when reading the bible) so you can’t harbor guiles like “Hate”, “Un-forgiveness”, “Malice”, “Envy”, “Contention”, “Greed”, “Bitterness”, “Anger” and walk with God. Now we both know that these things are normal human feelings. It is not easy to forgive a betrayal, especially from a loved one and it is certainly not facile to like or love those who hate you and will go any length to harm you. Sometimes, we take vengeance into our hands because we want instant repercussion. All these are humanly considerable or understandable but when we harbor these feelings that seem to have excuses for popping up, we do ourselves more harm and almost no good. We lay heavy weights on our shoulders that become burdens we carry everywhere we go and God certainly doesn’t want that for us. His plans for us are good and not deadweights. Plus these burdens certainly aren’t godly so for one to walk with God, one must empty oneself so God can fill him or her.

In the best and easiest way I can, I will be talking on 5 important tools needed in walking with God .

  1. BUILDING FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD

As easy as this may sound, this is the foundation upon which the others will lay. We had earlier defined fellowship as an association of persons having similar interest or feeling and based on this, we know that before one can fellowship with anyone, they must have the same interest.

One of the reasons behind our existence is fellowship. Remember God dialoging in the book of Genesis on making man in their image; after their likeness and after making man, He would habitually come in the cool of the evening to be with man. (read Genesis chapters 1 &2 ) This is so because fellowshipping is an important aspect of the God-Head. It took a group of divinity with a common interest to come together in agreement to create their kind which is man. Fellowshipping didn’t start the day man was created, rather it existed prior to the creation of man so when man was made in the image of God, he already had inside of him the character of fellowshipping which is why all living things fellowship in one way or the other.

Walking with God starts from building a private fellowship with God. This is so different from when we fellowship together as a family, group, church or ministry. The psalmist in his quest for deeper intimacy with God said to him “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where there is no water; to see thy power and thy Glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary” (Psalm 63: 1-2).

Imagine being in the desert – a dry, very dry land that requires a miracle for water and your craving for water or food (basic necessities for human survival) is nothing compared to your craving for the presence of God. Trust me; it takes some with a deep and strong private fellowship lifestyle to do that. God prior to the time David was in the wilderness of Judah had been David’s lifestyle; yes lifestyle. Though David had his ups and downs in character, his heart was fixated upon God: meditating upon Him both day and night, pouring out his sensational affections to God and the evidence of this deep intimate relationship still lives; such that thousands of generations after him prayer his prayer, recite his poems and sing his songs.

He was a beloved of God and one after God’s heart because He made God his beloved and one after his very own heart

What God I have made God to be to me doesn’t have to be what you can make God to be to you.  As diverse as we are in colour and individuality, so are we when we commune with God. we might be  hundreds of thousands in one gathering but when we lift our hearts up in worship, God picks and relates to hearts individually. Even when we, pray David’s prayers and recite his poems or sing his songs, we do it different from how he did it as God see us at such times and not David.

If the world’s population is however billions, trillions or zillions then we must know that God can accommodate every single body’s feeling for him. So what do you do? You create your very own kind of unique relationship with Him and start building it from there. And to build it, you must carve out time from your 24hrs in a day and give for your relationship. No relationship can grow without communication; therefore, daily communication private with God strengthens your personal relationship with Him

When we give God every day 30mins, 1 hour or even hours to God, it means volume to God. it says “I recognize you and I recognize that I cannot do without you. I love you and you mean everything to me, even this life that I live”. It says “I cannot find a way without you, I cannot be successful without you, I cannot survive without you”.  It says “I am because You are, and You are because of me”

Wondering what to say in your carved out time? Well, I would say, you should worry no more. Because God is after sincerity of heart, it makes our fellowship with Him all the more easier. JUST SAY HOW YOU FEEL. All that David did was to say what and how he felt.  The best person to tell everything  in confidence knowing your secret is safe is God. When you are angry, tell Him, when you are happy, tell Him, when you feel somewhat feeling for someone you are supposed to feel something for, tell him and when you feel something for someone you aren’t supposed to feel something for, tell Him. When you tell God anything and everything in a day, you will find out you have communicated with him at the end of the day

Building a personal fellowship lifestyle with God is not as tedious as it has been portrayed. God is not a monster therefore there is nothing to fear.  If you fear that you might not be good enough and you’re still alive, then you are not just good enough, you are perfect. All you need is to start today; wait, as a matter of fact, start right now. Go ahead and tell him how you feel right now. Confused, in a cross road, excited…whatever it is, just tell him. HIS EARS ARE NEXT TO YOUR MOUTH and He loves to hear you talk. Your voice means everything to him as much as HE means everything to you

And that’s how to build your personal fellowship with God…

Talk to you soon as we look into the other points…

RENEWING YOUR MIND

When you get born again, your spirit is reborn anew, but your soul is not, until you renew your mind.

The Bible says, be not conformed to this world – a world that has been fashioned to fail – but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Transformation comes from the renewing of the mind. The Bible says that we may prove what is the good, acceptable, and the perfect will of God; a continuous progression. Perfection in your life can only be brought about by the continuous renewal of your mind.

A baby, a toddler in church counts in terms of numbers. She can cry at will, demand for food during a serious service, complain when she is uncomfortable, and it is completely normal, even expected of her. But in terms of contributions to the Church, to the Body of Christ, she does not count, though she is recognized as a member of the Body of Christ. You are still a spiritual baby when you have not transformed your mind. A baby is anyone who wants everything to be done for them.

Growth is a proof of life, and maturity is expected of you. God expects you to grow out of that stage of babyhood, into the full maturity of a son. He wants you to be relevant, and to leave your mark in His kingdom, but this cannot be if you do not renew your mind. Remaining a baby will make you a spiritual liability, instead of a son with authority.

When you give your life to Christ, you receive light into your spirit, and everywhere you go, you ought to shine that light. But that light in you cannot shine until you renew your mind. Salvation is instant, but the salvation of the soul is progressive. Christ is mindful of the salvation of your soul.

How do you renew your mind?

You must feed your soul with the Word of God. Your inner man needs to be fed and nourished just as much as the body does. You must give food to your inner man, and that food is the Word of God. God is concerned about the success of your soul more than anything. This is why there cannot be prosperity until your soul succeeds, until your soul prospers.

You can go to Heaven, but not count there. You must renew your mind, so that you have the ability to do things on Earth that will make you count in Heaven.

PREPARE FOR GREATNESS

There is a law that makes you operate in abundance; a law that exempts you from hardship and struggle, a law that when you operate in, you will eventually become great. By careful observations over the years, greatness has been concluded to be a thing one prepares for and not something one stumbles upon.

There is no great man anywhere in the world that when asked “what is the key to your greatness?” says “I woke up one morning and suddenly discovered I was great”. As children and eaglets are born but sons and eagles are made, greatness is that which one consciously prepares for. It is a calculative, vision driven objective. In the second book of Chronicles, the bible records that Jotham became mighty not because he woke up or inherited it but because he prepared his way before the Lord.

“So Jotham became mighty because he prepared his ways before the Lord”

2 chronicles 27:6

It is never enough to say amen every time you are prayed for. Your amen (so be it) goes way beyond your mouth to pressing into action what will make you great. If you must be great, you must be a man of conviction and vision. It does not necessarily mean you must come from a very rich or averagely rich background to be great in life. The men that became king David’s mighty men as recorded in the bible were once ordinary men of low status (see 2 Samuel 23:8-39).

Every man has the potency of becoming great. It is not what you have that makes you great but what you do with what you have. Some generational wealth ended in hands of a particular generation because the people were not diligent enough to sustain the wealth they met. As long as you have a vision and you are convinced about that vision then you have all it takes to be great.

So if you have ever wondered if you can be great, the answer is yes. Yes you too are a candidate for greatness but you must come to this light that greatness without these following words VISION, CONVICTION, DILIGENCE, CONSISTENCY and SACRIFICE is a mere fantancy.

FIGHTING SPIRIT

One man with God is the majority. If you must prevail, you must have a fighting spirit. A fighting spirit refers to doggedness, resilience, staying power, tenacity. If you must prevail in your destiny, in your life, in your spirit, you must have a tenacious spirit. You must be ready to fight the fight and never give up.

You know what you are made up of in your trying periods. Can you maintain your confession in the face of challenges?

God told Abraham when He was seventy-five years old that he would have a son, and twenty-four years later he was still fervently waiting. All it took was another year. He did not give up on God, nor did he waver in his faith. You cannot afford to give up on God; you can’t give up, you can’t give in, cannot give away yourself; you must stay put in your faith.

Rom 4:18

“Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Jacob lost his leg, but encountered destiny. What are you willing to do for the glory? There is a fight to fight, and there is a price to pay for the glory you desire. You must have an iron will, and the power to refuse to be left behind.

Joshua would go up the mountain with Moses the Prophet. He heard nothing, saw nothing, but he’d stay forty days. Moses was in God’s presence and would not feel hunger, but Joshua, with his hunger, would stay on the mountain forty days! No wonder he was God’s first and only choice for a successor for Moses. He paid the price!

The intensity of the fight is determined by the gravity of your future. The heavier the battle, the greater the future.
