“He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty

I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress: My God: in Him will I trust. Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the flower, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with His feathers and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shall not be afraid of the terror of the night nor the arrow that flieth by day. Nor for the pestilence that worketh in darkness: nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall by thy side and ten thousand by thy right hand but it shall not come nigh thee only with thine eyes shall thou see and behold the wicked because thou has made the Lord which is thy refuge even the Most High thy habitation, there shall no evil befall you neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling place; for he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shall tread upon the lion and the adder: the young lion and the dragon shall thou trample under thy feet. Because he has set his love upon me,, therefore will I deliver him. I will set him on high because he has known my name. He shall call upon me and I will answer him: I will deliver him in trouble: I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and shew him my salvation”

Many times, when we come across psalms filled with beautiful promises as the one above, we are overwhelmed by the beauty in the promise that we fail to see the conditions that comes with the blessing. We confess as Christians these promises ignorant of the fact that the promise were made with conditions; meaning these promises cannot be gotten if the conditions are not met therefore no matter how much confession is made, the blessing goes to the one who meets the condition.

Chapter 1 of Psalm 91 begins with the condition and upon obeying the instruction; the blessings begin to unfold… “He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High”

Notice the psalmist didn’t say He that dwells in the public place (church) of the Most high rather the secret place.

Psalm 91 is a beautiful psalm with 16 verses, of which 15 are blessings and one, just one is the instruction. Wouldn’t it be only normal if that strikes a chord? All these blessings? one instruction? If you have ever asked this question or if you have never asked this question then this is a moment of truth.  The blessings in this psalm are exceedingly protective. I mean, who doesn’t want protection? Giving the fact that our lives are daily threatened by different factors ranging from the eco-system to the forces beyond human reasoning, who wouldn’t want protection for all these?  And because of the turbulent nature of life, Christians embrace this psalm reading pass the secret to the blessings.

The Secret Place is the place that is secretive to you and God alone. Where alone moments between you and God are shared. A place where God reveals secret, great and mighty secret; fenced in and hidden. A place where immense Love from both parties is expressively expressed, where you are all about God and God is all about you.

On a lighter note, have you ever sat in the congregation, filled with so much awe, wondering where your pastor gets his revelations from? Saying to yourself “how does he know all these things? Are we reading the same bible?” well, the answer is “he has an abode in a secret place where he shares secret moments with his master; THE ONE on whose errand he is on, and in that secret place, sharing that secret moment, God gives him deep insights to His Word even showing him His ways.”

TO DWELL is an action word which means TO LIVE, TO RESIDE, TO LINGER ON thus To Dwell in the secret place of the Most High is to make an ABODE (settled dwelling, housing, have a residence, occupy a position, live, resides, waiting and staying continuously continually) in the Secret Place (secluded hidden unknown place made know by revelation or discovery) of the Most High.  It means having a have a residential address in a secluded place where God the Almighty makes known to you “JUST FOR YOU AND HIM”. It surpasses the regular Sunday and midweek bible sturdy meetings which involves other people. TO DWELL in his secret place means having a private relationship with God: where the cravings and desires of the heart pushes you to want more of God, knowing Him deeper and deeper; Seeking for more companionship with God than that which is gotten from church … the man who has a dwelling place in God’s secret place is known  to and by God and God IN RETURN MAKES Himself known to Him. Dwelling in God’s secret Place is walking with God and to walk with a person is to be on the same track, step, line or page with the person.

To dwell in God’s secret place is to have continuous fellowship with God; having a burning desire to know His name, His personality and all that He represents.

I have never ceased to wonder and ponder on how Enoch (a man of flesh and like passion) walked with God. The relationship that existed between Enoch and God was so strong that the story could not be told still the bible could not be written without mentioning it

“When Enoch was 65 years old, Methuselah was born. Enoch walked (in habitual fellowship) with God after the birth of Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch was 365 years:  And Enoch walked (in habitual fellowship) with God and he was not for God took Him (home with Him)”. Genesis 5 :21-24 (AMP)

Hmmm! The jaw breaking part of this concise biography of this man is the later part which says he walked habitually in fellowship with God that He was not for God took him home with Him.

Firstly, the word Fellowship has two intriguing meanings.

1: An association or a company of people that share the same interest, aim or similar taste

2:  friendly relationship; companionship

These two definitions take us to the book of the beginning, “Genesis”. We were created to be like God, think like God, and act like God and on behalf of God having a friendly relationship with God… “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26a).

We are all about Him. The things we do and the things we say, to bring put a smile on His face and bring Glory to His Name which is the first definition and there is no way the first can work out perfectly well if the second is not greatly put into consideration and action.

We cannot be for God when we are not to God and on this foundational principle the great psalm 91 was built. God is undeniably principled.  You cannot eat the fruit of a tree without loving the tree. The 15 blessings are rewards that are attached to the keeping of the No 1 “he that dwells in the secret place”

JESUS The CHRIST was accustomed to raising up early a great while before the break of dawn to go up to a secret place in maintaining His personal relationship with His Father (Mark 1: 35).  If Jesus’ mission could not be accomplished without His secret moments, then ours are no exception. Jesus was too crowded; everyone wanted a piece of Him, plots were against Him and the weight was all on Him, having a great mission to accomplish. So He shut the door between Him and the world and opened the door to another world of Him and His Father

There are many sides to God but these two “His Face and His Hands” encompasses them all.  Witnessing the “Hand of God” is a reward for seeking the “Face of God”. We please the heart of God when we seek “His Face” therefore He gladly opens “His Hands” towards us and for us.  When we dwell in the secret place o the Most High, we shut the world outside and say to God “You are all that matters. You come before everything and I exalt You above everything” and in the place, with so much gladness of heart, He teaches everything as pertaining our purpose: How to go about it.

The secret place can be anywhere and you can have these moments at anytime. It can be in the confinement of your room or just a carved out corner in your room, It can be on a mountain or in a cave. But don’t fret if you don’t have a room to yourself or someone else manages your life thereby dictating how you use your time. The key is giving God your heart, expressing your love and desire for Him, recognizing His authority and rulership.  You can be in a crowd and shut the crowd but if you can move away from the crowd it would do you more well.

Giving God a part of your day can never be over emphasized. The rewards attached to it are priceless and can never be bought. Anytime is a good time but the best part will be the night-early hours before the dawn as every hour of the day has its significance and its mystery

A whole lot is in it for you but to list a few… if you seek the Face of God

  • Your strength is renewed (Isaiah 40:31)
  • Your fears and worries die
  • You carry aura of beauty and glory
  • Wellness and Longevity of life
  • Honor and prosperity
  • Protection
  • Productivity
  • Wisdom
  • Knowledge
  • Understanding
  • Power
  • Faith etc

I mean, what more could you ask for!

It is important to know that we go seeking the face of God not because of what we want from Him but because of what we want to give to Him- “the expression of our love for Him”. Verse 14 of the same Psalm says “because he has set his love upon Me…I will rescue him, I will protect him because he acknowledged My Name”.

So look for GOD and I assure you, you will look like HIM!!!

God bless you! Till the next time… Looking forward to sharing with you…
